History & Development of Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra

The orchestra gave its first concert on 25 May 1948 at Hobart Town Hall under conductor Joseph Post, with pianist Eileen Joyce performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto. From 1973 to 1998, its home was the Odeon Theatre before moving to the Federation Concert Hall. The orchestra also became the first in Australia to host its own weekly radio program, Journey into Melody (1956–1969).
